The scindias rose from humble origins to become one of the most powerful Maratha ruling dynasties. Shrimant Ranojirao Scindia began his career as a general to the powerful Maratha Peshwar Bajirao I. He later founded the Gwalior princely state and reigned as Maharaja from 1731 until his death in 1745. The dynasty went from strength to strength and by the second half of the 18th century, it had control over large territories of Northern India. With the increasing strength of the British forces after the defeat of the Marathas in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Gwalior became a state in British India. The Scindias continued to rule the region until Indian Independence in 1947, when Jiwajirao Scindia acceded to the Government of India. The family have since been active in politics. Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia, the wife of the late Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia, was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and her son Madhav Rao represented Guna and held ministerial positions in the Indian government. His son Jyotiraditya Madhav Rao Scindia now also represents Guna, and was re-elected to the position in 2014.
