The ancient landscape of Gwalior has seen many stories. The Rajputs, the Moghuls, the Marathas and the British have all made their mark on it. Gwalior Fort is the most ancient standing monument to attest to this long history, its colourful exterior striking a unique contrast against the skyline. Three temples and six palaces sit within its grounds and incredible Jain colossuses hewn from the living rock stare down from their permanent home below the fort. Jai Vilas palace stands as a reminder of the period of the Scindias, who ruled the state from the early 18th century until Indian Independence from the British in 1947.
